We use non-thermal (cool) lasers on low level to bathe the scalp and hair in a pure therapeutic red light that interacts with the body’s cellular metabolism to produce a fuller, thicker, healthier looking head of hair.
The treatment is effective on men and women on the entire scalp providing that the follicle has not died.
The History of Low Level Laser Light Therapy
In 1903, the Nobel Prize in Medicine (Physiology) was awarded to Niels Ryberg Finsen M.D. in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases with concentrated light energy, photo therapy. Dr. Finsen was recognized for opening a new avenue for medical science.
In 1964 while working on mice and diabetics with wound healing problems, using low level laser treatments, Dr. Andre Mester found a density increase in the hair in the treated area. Many years and much research later, a scientific principle of photo-biostimulation indicates that the application of a specific kind of light at the right power and frequency will increase blood flow and cell metabolism increasing density and growth rate of hair. Hair cells are photosensitive and are fast growing cells. Laser light has a more dramatic effect on these cells than any other cells in the body.
In January of 2007, the FDA cleared a low level laser device known as the HairMax Lasercomb as an effective device for promoting hair growth. The HairMax clinical results shows it worked on 93% of the men tested. Men between 30-60 years old grew 19 new hairs per square centimeter (size of a dime) and did it all in 6 months. So for the first time in history, there is credible evidence that an appliance or device can make hair grow. Because hair growth is a medical claim, the HairMax Lasercomb falls into the category of a medical device and as such, cannot be used to treat another person without medical oversight.
Lasers are used for a multitude of procedures including:

Hair loss treatments over the years - dating from 1553 BC to today
*Many of the treatments listed are harmful or deadly to the patient, don’t work, have side effects, are difficult to maintain or cost more than the average person can afford*
When it comes to hair loss, people can be very imaginative on ways to prevent it. Since men and women have suffered from hair loss for as long as we’ve existed, there were some pretty extreme ideas.
-
The oldest known written prescription for treating baldness: a mixture of iron oxide, red lead, onions, alabaster, honey and fat from a variety of animals including snakes, crocodiles, hippopotamuses and lions. The mixture was to be swallowed, after first reciting a magical invocation to the Sun God.

hair implantation but it was banned by the FDA because of massive scalp inflammation, scarring and even more hair loss on every patient. -
Snap on hairpiece- titanium sockets are screwed through the scalp into the
skull and allowed to fuse with the bone over a period of three months. Then small gold alloy snaps are screwed into the sockets. The snaps mate securely with attachments formed into the underside of a custom made hairpiece. Life threatening bone and brain infections are possibilities with this procedure. -

Some people choose to store samples of their hair at a Hair Bank for an annual
fee in the hopes that a cure for baldness will be found someday and they will
need a sample. -
Hair cloning is also being studied by culturing stem cells from the patient’s hair follicle.
Thankfully, technology has progressed over the years and we now are able to provide a safe, painless, effective and affordable way to combat hair loss.

Low Level Laser Light Therapy using the correct frequency has been approved by the FDA to clinically re-grow hair. In the clinical trials,
93% of those tested grew 19 new hairs per square centimeter in 6 months. There are no side effects and the procedure is non invasive.
Hair loss causes
Most people are skeptical of treatments that promise to reverse hair loss but a new era of hair restoration technology using laser hair therapy offers hope for those who don’t have advanced hair loss (i.e.: follicles are dead and no longer produce) - this can be determined by having a Laser Hair Enhancement consultant examine your scalp under the Proscope (magnification camera). There are approximately 80 million people who suffer from hair loss. It can be emotionally devastating for men and women, affecting their self esteem and self confidence. Hair loss in women is more than a cosmetic concern; it can have deep psychological effects.
Androgenetic alopecia causes 95% of hair loss issues. The other 5% of issues are caused by stress, medical issues, over the counter medication, prescriptions, and for women, menopause is an issue because of lower estrogen levels. What happens in most cases is that testosterone that we all have in our bodies, bonds with the enzyme 5 alpha reductase to form dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Each time your hair goes through the hair growth cycle, the DHT miniaturizes the hair so it grows thinner, shorter and with less color. Eventually the follicle dies and the hair cannot grow.
There are illnesses and medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, lupus or thyroid disease, that can interfere with hair production and cause hair loss. The hormone imbalance that occurs in polycystic ovary syndrome can cause hair loss in teen girls as well as adult women. Hair loss can also occur in people who take steroids like testosterone to build their bodies.
Alopecia areata is a skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and sometimes elsewhere on the body. It affects 1.7% of the population, including more than 5 million people in the United States. Alopecia areata is thought to be an autoimmune disease, in which the hair follicles are damaged by a person's own immune system. The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs in a person's body. Alopecia areata usually starts as one or more small, round bald patches on the scalp. These can get bigger, and in a small number of cases, can progress to Alopecia Totalis (total hair loss on the head) or Alopecia Universalis (total hair loss on the body). The hair usually grows back within a year, but not always. Sometimes people with alopecia areata lose their hair again.
Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder in which people repeatedly pull their hair out, often leaving bald patches. It results in areas of baldness and damaged hairs of different lengths. People with trichotillomania usually need professional help from a therapist or other mental health professional before they are able to stop pulling their hair out.
Hair treatments and styling can cause problems too. Having your hair chemically treated, such as getting your hair colored, bleached, straightened, or permed, can cause damage and weaken the hair and it may make the hair break off or fall out temporarily. Another type of baldness that results from hair styling actually can be permanent. Wearing hair pulled so tightly that it places tension on the scalp can result in a condition called traction alopecia. Traction alopecia can be permanent if the style is worn for a long enough time that it damages the hair follicles.
Poor nutrition can contribute to hair loss. This is why some people with eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia lose their hair. The body isn't getting enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to sustain hair growth. Some teens who are vegetarians also lose their hair if they don't get enough protein from non-meat sources. Some athletes are at higher risk for hair loss because they may be more likely to develop iron-deficiency anemia. Those who go through gastric bypass surgery are also at risk for hair loss due to poor nutrition (as well as stress and medication from the surgery).
Disruption of the hair growth cycle can cause hair loss and major events in your life can alter the hair's growth cycle temporarily. For example, delivering a baby, having surgery, or going through a traumatic event can temporarily cause shedding of large amounts of hair but, because the hair we see on our heads has actually taken months to grow, a person might not notice any disruption of the hair growth cycle until months after the event that caused it. This type of hair loss usually corrects itself. If it does not correct itself, the Laser Hair Enhancement treatments can be very beneficial.
The best way to take care of your hair is to eat a balanced, healthy diet. It is important for your wellbeing as well as benefiting your hair. If you're losing hair, there are a few things you can do to lessen the shedding. Some doctors recommend using baby shampoo, shampooing no more than once a day, and lathering gently. Don't rub your hair too vigorously with a towel as this may pull out fragile roots. Many hair experts suggest you consider putting away the blow dryer and air drying your hair instead. If you can't live without your blow dryer, try using it on a low heat setting. Style your hair when it's dry or damp. Styling your hair while it's wet can cause it to stretch and break. And try to avoid teasing your hair too much or too vigorously, which can cause damage. Finally, be careful when using chemicals such as straighteners or color on your hair. Avoid frequent use of chemical treatments. Take the advice of your hair stylist. They can tell if your hair is healthy enough for a chemical treatment.
There are approximately 700 medications that have caused hair loss in some people.
Most medications have multiple names including brand and generic as well as names that vary from country to country. Every name for every drug is not included in this list. Please be aware that the incidence of hair loss occurring is infrequent in the majority of people for most of these medications and some of the medications may cause hair loss prior to increased hair growth. Discuss any concerns you have with your physician.

Hair growth cycle
To appreciate how the laser works, you need to understand how hair grows and replaces itself in its natural cycle. Every hair on your head usually grows for several years and then falls out. The root then rests for some weeks before starting to re-grow a new hair. This cycle continues throughout your life. Unfortunately, as we age, some people replace fewer hairs than are shed resulting in thinner hair and gradually baldness occurs. You don't go bald or thin out because your hair falls out - it's meant to do so. You go bald or thin out if it doesn't grow back! Of all the hair loss causes out there, 95% are caused by Androgenetic Alopecia which is genetic hair loss. What happens is that the enzyme 5 alpha reductase bonds with testosterone that we all have in our bodies and forms dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Each time our hair goes through the growth process, the DHT attacks the follicle and the hair becomes weak, miniaturized and loses color. When our lasers are used on a regular basis, they strengthen and regenerate the hair roots. This slows or stops, and in most cases, reverses the degenerative cycle as previously described.
Most people have between 100,000-120,000 hairs on their head and it’s normal and healthy to shed between 50-100 hairs per day. The Anagen Cycle is the active growth phase and it lasts for 2-6 years. It is followed by the Catagen / transition phase that lasts for 1-2 weeks. This is when your hair has stopped actively growing. Your hair will start to shed during this phase and will continue to shed through the Telogen / resting phase which lasts for 5-6 weeks. Approximately 10% of your hair is in the Catagen and Telogen phases and the other 90% is actively growing in the Anagen phase. Our hair is made of a type of protein called keratin. A single hair consists of a hair shaft (the part that shows), a root below the skin, and a follicle, from which the hair root grows. At the lower end of the follicle is the hair bulb, where the hair's color pigment, or melanin, is produced.
What to expect
DURING A CONSULTATION-
Upon arrival, you will fill out a New Client History Form. It is very important that we take detailed information about your Daily Habits, Scalp Condition, General Health, Dieting, Nutrition, Medication (over the counter and prescription), Gynecological System (female clients), Hair Health History, Genetic Patterns and Stress Levels. All of this information provides clues as to why you are losing your hair. Please let your consultant know of any concerns you have.
If after looking at the New Client History Form, your consultant feels you have a medical condition, you will be advised to seek medical help from a physician.
While you are here, we will discuss the many reasons for hair loss. You may have one issue or a combination of a few. If we find that a medication that you are taking is causing the hair loss, DO NOT STOP TAKING THAT MEDICATION. It is best to discuss with your physician if there is a substitute medication or if your current medication must not be changed. Laser Hair Enhancement currently has clients that are taking medications on the list that cause hair loss but they are still achieving results.
We will also discuss how Low Level Laser Light Therapy was discovered in 1964 when Dr. Andre Mester was experimenting with lasers to find treatments to heal wounds on diabetic patients. He found that the skin around the wound started to grow hair. The process of the follicle reacting to the laser is called “photo-biostimulation”. Since light is a form of energy, the laser light energizes the tissue. By doing so, laser light increases the energy available to cells. It penetrates into soft tissue and increases the action of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that is a major carrier of energy from one reaction site to another in all living cells. Increases in ATP allow cells to accept nutrients faster and get rid waste products faster by increasing the energy level in the cell. It is very similar to the process of “photosynthesis” for plants in which the sun’s light energy is converted to chemical energy in order for the plant to grow.
The HairMax Laser Comb was approved by the FDA Jan. 2007. In the clinical trials, it increased hair growth in 93% of those tested by 19 new hairs per square centimeter (dime size) over a 6 month period. The lasers are non-thermal (cool) and are non invasive so there is no pain involved as in surgical grafts or implants. Laser Hair Enhancement is a scientific approach to creating a thicker, fuller looking head of hair. We combine the latest technology in cosmetic lasers with a holistic program of all natural, chemical free hair care products. Our programs are for clients who demonstrate sufficient hair follicles capable of being rehabilitated by laser hair therapy.
During your consultation, you will see before and after pictures from actual Laser Hair Therapy Clients. We will go over what to expect from the laser program so we are on the same page. Because we are working with the human body, results vary. There is no way to know how each person will react to the laser. Some clients will get modest results with the lasers and some will achieve outstanding results in the appearance of their hair, but to someone who is losing their hair, any improvement is welcome.
Your scalp and hair follicles will be evaluated with the Proscope (a camera that magnifies the scalp 50X). By magnifying the scalp by 50X, we are able to look closely at the follicle for hair health and viability of the follicle. In doing this, we will be able to ascertain if you are a good candidate for recovery. Because a Laser Hair Enhancement consultant will be evaluating your scalp, you will need to remove any prosthetic devices (wig, hair piece) or if you color your scalp (not your hair), you will need to have the color removed prior to the appointment.
DURING TREATMENT-
Our lasers have the same frequency as those approved by the FDA to clinically grow hair, 650 nanometers, 5 milliwatts ±. The lasers are non thermal (no heat), are non invasive so there is no pain like you would have with surgical implants and there are no side effects.
Laser therapy used on a regular basis strengthens and regenerates the hair roots. The laser slows, stops, or in most cases, reverses the degenerative cycle. We recommend that clients come twice a week for 30 minute sessions. It is important to leave at least one day or 48 hours between treatments to allow follicles to rest. Clients will usually have 8-10 treatments per month. Each treatment is documented. At the end of every three months, a follow up evaluation will be done. Once the maximum benefit is achieved, clients will need to return once monthly for “booster” laser sessions. Most clients achieve maximum results in 6 months to 1 year. More frequent or longer usage will not increase results.
It is important that clients adhere to the prescribed regimen and treatment protocols and utilize the Laser Hair Enhancement products. Within 2-4 weeks some users may experience increased hair shedding. (Normal shedding is 50-100 hairs per day.) This is a good sign and means that the laser is working. The shedding occurs because the laser activates the hair follicle’s growth cycle. Hair that is in the Catagen (transition) or Telogen (resting) phases are put into the Anagen (active) phase. The hair must shed in order to grow a new hair. You should feel a difference in the hair within a few weeks and some clients will have visible results in just a few months.
Remember, hair doesn’t do anything fast!
